A new project: becoming a mission-driven company

In line with the purpose, adopting the quality of a mission-driven company comes from the desire to direct its activity towards the pursuit of social and environmental objectives while supporting its performance over the long term.

With the creation of the Portelo mission company, which places societal and environmental utility at the heart of the redevelopment and operation project for the Toulon Provence Méditerranée harbor, Eiffage and Sodeport are part of a sincere approach to promoting the territory with an integrated approach to the environment.

"Offering to be a company with a mission allowed the Eiffage/Sodeport group to make an impact and swing the negotiation to win the concession for the development and operation of the Toulon harbor. Marsatwork delivered a concept and a company set up in one year to put the public service mission at the heart of port activity, it is a success"

Diane Renouard, CSR consulting director at Marsatwork

By aiming to increase maritime traffic in the Toulon harbor, the project seemed, due to the risk of pollution and the human impact, to go against the environmental and attractiveness issues. How to reconcile growth and sustainability?

From the design sprint to the transformation into a mission-driven company, including the creation of a simple and fun interface accessible to all, the 360° support provided by Marsatwork to the Eiffage/Sodeport group has enabled the emergence of a totally innovative project in line with social and environmental issues.

The teams worked collaboratively to bring out a unifying concept (a global harbor with particularities for each port) which takes into account all the stakeholders (residents, military, boaters, tourists, biodiversity) and allows all ecosystems to coexist together (natural, human, economic). A boat berth rotation system has also been established to streamline traffic without further impacting biodiversity.

It was imperative to have the Eiffage teams work on dual materiality with a mapping of externalities, to identify the different points on which they could interact in order to support their business model and reduce their risks of failure in the long term”.
Diane Renouard, CSR director in charge of the project at Marsatwork.

The reflection led the Eiffage/Sodeport group to evolve its business model (more resources allocated to CSR) to the point of formulating its positive contribution and modifying its governance. This is how Portelo was born, the first company with a port operating mission in France, which includes in its clauses the return of part of the profits in the service of sustainable development in the harbor.
